Mariposa is the county seat of Mariposa County, a Gold Rush town in the Sierra Nevada foothills along Highway 140. Its two-story courthouse, built in 1854, is the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of the Rocky Mountains, and the main street still holds 19th-century storefronts, saloons and historic hotels. Today the local economy depends on tourism linked to Yosemite National Park, along with ranching, county government and small businesses serving visitors and residents.
Highway 140 follows the Merced River canyon from Mariposa into Yosemite Valley in a little over an hour, and it is the route most often open year-round. Mariposa-Yosemite Airport sits just outside town, so you can fly in directly instead of driving four hours or more from the Bay Area or five or more from Los Angeles. That makes a weekend in Yosemite realistic for travelers short on time. Visitors come to see El Capitan, Half Dome and Yosemite Falls, walk among the giant sequoias of the Mariposa Grove and raft the Merced in spring. Check park entry requirements before you go.

Things to do in Mariposa
When to go. Spring is the best time to see Yosemite’s waterfalls at full force, and April through June brings the rafting season on the Merced River. Summer is the busiest season, with Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road open and warm days in the foothills. Fall is quieter, with fewer crowds, though some waterfalls run low. Winter brings snow to Yosemite’s higher elevations, while the valley and Mariposa remain accessible on Highway 140.

Built in 1854 and still in use, the white wooden courthouse with its clock tower is one of the most significant Gold Rush–era buildings in California.

At the Mariposa County fairgrounds, the museum displays gems, minerals and mining equipment, including a large crystalline gold specimen known as the Fricot Nugget.
