Things to do in Ithaca

Ithaca sits at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes, a college town defined by Cornell University and Ithaca College and by the deep gorges and waterfalls that cut through the city. Cornell’s research enterprise, spanning engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine and hotel administration, draws faculty, visiting researchers, startups and investors, and the university calendar brings a steady flow of prospective students, parents and alumni. The Ithaca Commons, the farmers market and a strong local food culture give the town its own character.

  1. 01

    Cornell University

The hillside campus overlooks Cayuga Lake and offers the Cornell Botanic Gardens, the Johnson Museum of Art, views from Libe Slope and paths through Cascadilla and Fall Creek gorges.

  2. 02

    Taughannock Falls State Park

Taughannock Falls drops about 215 feet, one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls east of the Rockies, reached by an easy gorge trail from the lakeshore.

  3. 03

    Ithaca Farmers Market

Held in a large timber pavilion on Cayuga Inlet, this cooperative market sells produce, cheese, prepared foods and crafts, and is a weekend institution.

  4. 04

    Robert H. Treman State Park

The Gorge Trail here passes 12 waterfalls, including Lucifer Falls, and a stream-fed swimming area at the base of a waterfall is open in summer.

  5. 05

    Cayuga Lake Wine Trail

Wineries along the lake’s shores produce Riesling and other cool-climate wines, and tasting rooms are scattered along the scenic roads on both sides of the lake.

  6. 06

    Watkins Glen State Park

About 30 miles west at the south end of Seneca Lake, a trail climbs through a narrow gorge past 19 waterfalls, sometimes passing behind the falling water.
