Things to do in Galena

Galena made its fortune in the 1800s as a lead mining and Mississippi River trading town, and when the boom faded it was left with one of the best-preserved collections of 19th-century buildings in the Midwest. Most of the town lies within a National Register historic district, and its brick storefronts along Main Street now hold boutiques, galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms. Ulysses S. Grant lived here before the Civil War, and the town gave him a home on his return. Tourism, second homes and hospitality drive the local economy.
