Things to do in Ely

Ely is a historic copper-mining town in eastern Nevada and the seat of White Pine County, where the Nevada Northern Railway still runs restored steam trains from its preserved early-1900s rail yard. Mining remains important to the local economy, along with ranching, government and tourism, and the town’s remote location along U.S. 50, known as the Loneliest Road in America, adds to its character. The surrounding valleys and ranges are among the least crowded landscapes in the lower 48, which is exactly what draws many visitors.

About an hour east, the park protects Lehman Caves, ancient bristlecone pines and Wheeler Peak, Nevada’s second-highest summit, with scenic drives and hiking.

  3. 03

Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park

South of Ely, six beehive-shaped stone ovens built in the 1870s produced charcoal for nearby silver smelters and remain remarkably well preserved.
