Things to do in Marathon

Marathon sits in the heart of the Florida Keys, a string of islands roughly midway between Key Largo and Key West. It is a working fishing town as much as a resort area, with charter captains, commercial boats and marinas filling Boot Key Harbor and the bayside canals. The flats, reefs and offshore waters put tarpon, bonefish, permit, snapper and mahi all within reach, and many visitors plan an entire trip around the bite.

  1. 01

    Seven Mile Bridge

Connecting Marathon to the Lower Keys, the bridge offers sweeping water views, and the restored Old Seven Mile Bridge alongside it is open to walkers and cyclists out to Pigeon Key.

  2. 02

    Pigeon Key

This tiny island beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge preserves the camp that housed workers building Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, with guided tours and a small museum.

  3. 03

    The Turtle Hospital

Housed in a former motel, this nonprofit rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles, and guided tours offer a look at its patients and treatment areas.

  4. 04

    Sombrero Beach

One of the best public beaches in the Keys, with soft sand, palm trees, picnic pavilions and calm water, plus a protected sea turtle nesting area in season.

  5. 05

    Dolphin Research Center

On Grassy Key, this nonprofit research and education facility lets visitors watch and interact with dolphins and sea lions through hands-on educational programs.

  6. 06

    Bahia Honda State Park

A short drive southwest, Bahia Honda is known for some of the finest natural beaches in the Keys, clear water for snorkeling and the photogenic old railroad bridge.
