Things to do in Galena

Galena made its fortune in the 1800s as a lead mining and Mississippi River trading town, and when the boom faded it was left with one of the best-preserved collections of 19th-century buildings in the Midwest. Most of the town lies within a National Register historic district, and its brick storefronts along Main Street now hold boutiques, galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms. Ulysses S. Grant lived here before the Civil War, and the town gave him a home on his return. Tourism, second homes and hospitality drive the local economy.

  2. 02

    Main Street Historic District

A curving street of restored 19th-century brick buildings is lined with shops, galleries, candy stores, restaurants and wine and spirits tasting rooms, all within easy walking distance.

  3. 03

    Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa

East of town in the Galena Territory, the resort offers several golf courses among the rolling hills, a spa, Lake Galena and rental homes for families and groups.

  4. 04

    Chestnut Mountain Resort

Overlooking the Mississippi River south of town, this resort offers downhill skiing in winter and an alpine slide and river views in the warmer months.

  5. 05

    Galena River Trail

A flat path follows the river south from downtown past wetlands and bluffs, ideal for walking, biking and spotting herons and eagles.

  6. 06

National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium

Across the river in nearby Dubuque, Iowa, this Smithsonian-affiliated museum explores the river’s wildlife, history and boats through aquariums, historic vessels and wetland trails.
