Things to do in Montauk

Montauk is the easternmost point of New York State, a fishing village at the end of the South Fork that has become one of the Northeast’s favorite beach towns. Its character is more relaxed than the rest of the Hamptons, with surf breaks, seafood shacks, a busy harbor full of sportfishing boats and the Montauk Point Lighthouse standing on bluffs above the Atlantic. Summer residents, surfers, anglers and weekend crowds from the city keep its small hotels and restaurants busy from late spring into fall.

  1. 01

    Montauk Point Lighthouse

    Ditch Plains

Montauk’s best-known surf spot has gentle breaks suited to longboarders and learners, with a casual beach scene and food trucks parked at the lot.

    Montauk Harbor

Home to one of the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleets in New York, the harbor is lined with charter boats, docks, seafood restaurants and fish markets.

  4. 04

    Camp Hero State Park

A former military base with concrete bunkers and a towering radar tower, the park has bluff-top trails, surf fishing access and sweeping views of the ocean.

  5. 05

    Hither Hills State Park

This oceanfront park has a long sandy beach, camping, wooded trails and the Walking Dunes, where wind is slowly moving the sand across the forest.
