Things to do in Westerly

Westerly sits in Rhode Island’s southwestern corner along the Pawcatuck River, where the state meets Connecticut. Its historic downtown grew around textile mills and granite quarries, and today the town is best known for its seaside villages: Watch Hill, with its Victorian summer homes, the Ocean House hotel and the Flying Horse Carousel, and Misquamicut, with its long public beach. Tourism, second homes, healthcare and local businesses make up much of the economy.

  1. 01

    Watch Hill

  2. 02

    Flying Horse Carousel

Believed to be among the oldest operating carousels in the country, this Watch Hill ride has hand-carved horses suspended from chains so they “fly” outward as it spins.

    Misquamicut State Beach

A long stretch of sandy ocean beach with lifeguards, a pavilion and nearby beachfront restaurants and amusements makes Misquamicut a classic summer destination.

  4. 04

    Napatree Point Conservation Area

Beyond Watch Hill, a sandy spit extends into the water with beaches, dunes, osprey nests and the ruins of Fort Mansfield, reached on foot.

  5. 05

    Wilcox Park

Downtown, this landscaped park designed in the late 19th century hosts Shakespeare in the Park and concerts in summer under its old shade trees.

  6. 06

    Stonington Borough

Across the Connecticut line, this historic fishing village has a lighthouse museum, a busy dock with a commercial fleet and charming streets of antiques shops and cafés.
