Bend grew up as a lumber mill town on the Deschutes River and has become the largest city in Central Oregon and one of the fastest-growing in the state. Sunshine, mountain views and year-round recreation have drawn a mix of outdoor-industry companies, tech startups, remote workers, entrepreneurs and retirees, and healthcare, tourism, construction and real estate are major parts of the economy. Deschutes Brewery started here in 1988, and the town now has a large number of breweries and a lively restaurant scene.
