Today the city’s largest employer is the University of Alabama at Birmingham, whose academic medical center draws patients and researchers from across the South, and the metro area is also a banking and insurance center, home to Regions Financial and a number of other major companies. Birmingham’s role in the civil rights movement, from the Children’s Crusade to the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, makes its downtown a place of pilgrimage.
