Things to do in Macon

Macon is middle Georgia’s largest city and a crossroads where I-75 and I-16 meet. Its economy rests on healthcare, education, manufacturing and logistics, with Mercer University downtown and Robins Air Force Base, one of the state’s largest employers, just to the south in Warner Robins. Macon also has a remarkable musical legacy as the home of Little Richard and Otis Redding and the place where the Allman Brothers Band got its start, and its downtown is rich in 19th-century architecture.

  1. 01

    Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

On the east edge of the city, earthen mounds built by Mississippian people more than a thousand years ago include a reconstructed earth lodge with its original clay floor.

  2. 02

The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House

The Tudor-style house where band members and their families lived in the early 1970s is now a museum filled with instruments, gold records, photographs and memorabilia.

  3. 03

    Hay House

This Italian Renaissance Revival mansion, completed in the 1850s, was remarkably advanced for its time, with indoor plumbing and a hidden room, and is open for guided tours.

  4. 04

    Museum of Aviation

Next to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, this large, free museum displays dozens of historic military aircraft, from World War II fighters to the SR-71 Blackbird.

  5. 05

    Grand Opera House

Opened in 1884, this downtown theater, operated by Mercer University, presents touring Broadway shows, concerts and performances in a lavishly restored auditorium.

  6. 06

    Amerson River Park

Along the Ocmulgee River north of downtown, the park offers paved trails, a canoe and kayak launch, playgrounds and a river walk linking to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail.
