Things to do in Eleuthera

Eleuthera is a long, thin island stretching over 100 miles from north to south, with the Atlantic on one side and the calm Bight of Eleuthera on the other, often within sight of each other. Its history begins with the Eleutheran Adventurers, Puritan settlers from Bermuda who arrived in the 1640s, and Governor’s Harbour, in central Eleuthera, is among its oldest towns. Victorian-era houses climb the hill above the harbor, and the town serves as the island’s administrative center, with the Haynes Library, small inns and an easygoing Friday-night fish fry.

    Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve

Operated by the Bahamas National Trust south of Governor’s Harbour, this preserve showcases native and medicinal plants along walking trails, boardwalks and a lookout tower.

  3. 03

    Glass Window Bridge

In North Eleuthera, a short bridge spans the narrowest point of the island, with the deep blue Atlantic crashing on one side and the calm, turquoise Bight on the other.

  4. 04

    Queen’s Bath

Near the Glass Window Bridge, natural tide pools carved into the rocks warm in the sun and fill with seawater when Atlantic waves spill over the ledges.

  5. 05

    Surfer’s Beach

Near Gregory Town, this break offers some of the most consistent surf in the Bahamas when winter swells roll in from the Atlantic, with a laid-back surf community.

  6. 06

    Haynes Library

A handsome 19th-century building overlooking the harbor in Governor’s Harbour, the library serves as a community hub for reading, classes, events and local history.
