Things to do in Lawrence

Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas, and the university’s research, medical and engineering programs bring faculty, recruiters, visiting scholars and industry partners to town year-round. The city has a history that runs deeper than most college towns: it was founded by antislavery settlers in 1854 and burned during Quantrill’s raid in 1863. Basketball has its own special place here, since James Naismith, the game’s inventor, coached at KU, and his original rules are displayed on campus.

  1. 01

    Allen Fieldhouse

Named for coach Phog Allen, KU’s historic arena is one of the loudest and most storied venues in college basketball, with the Booth Family Hall of Athletics inside.

  2. 02

    DeBruce Center

Next to Allen Fieldhouse, this building displays James Naismith’s original 1891 rules of basketball, the founding document of the game.

    Massachusetts Street

Lawrence’s main street is lined with independent shops, restaurants, bars and music venues, including the historic Granada Theater and the Liberty Hall cinema.

    Spencer Museum of Art

KU’s art museum holds a broad collection spanning European, American and Asian art, with free admission and frequently changing exhibitions.

  5. 05

    KU Natural History Museum

Housed in Dyche Hall, the museum is known for its panorama of North American wildlife and fossils from the ancient seas that once covered Kansas.

  6. 06

    Clinton State Park

On the shore of Clinton Lake west of town, the park has miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, a marina, swimming beaches and campgrounds.
