Things to do in Natchitoches

Founded by the French in 1714, Natchitoches is the oldest permanent European settlement in the territory of the Louisiana Purchase, and its brick-paved Front Street and historic district along Cane River Lake reflect three centuries of French, Spanish and Creole history. The town is home to Northwestern State University, and the economy centers on education, tourism and agriculture. Natchitoches is also known for its meat pies and for serving as the backdrop for the 1989 film Steel Magnolias, which was shot in town.
