Things to do in Tacoma
Tacoma grew up as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway and remains a working port city: the Port of Tacoma, operated jointly with Seattle as the Northwest Seaport Alliance, handles a large share of the region’s container cargo. Joint Base Lewis-McChord, one of the largest military installations in the country, sits just to the south, and healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and the University of Puget Sound round out the economy. The city has also reinvented its waterfront and downtown around museums, much of it inspired by native son Dale Chihuly and the studio glass movement.
- 01
Museum of Glass
Marked by a tilted steel cone on the Thea Foss Waterway, the museum features contemporary glass art and a hot shop where visitors can watch artists blow and shape glass.
- 02
Chihuly Bridge of Glass
This pedestrian bridge links the Museum of Glass to downtown beneath a ceiling of Dale Chihuly’s colorful glass forms and alongside walls of his sculpture.
- 03
Point Defiance Park
One of the largest urban parks in the country takes in old-growth forest, beaches, gardens, Five Mile Drive and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.
- 04
LeMay – America’s Car Museum
Next to the Tacoma Dome, this four-level museum displays a rotating collection of hundreds of cars, trucks and motorcycles that trace the history of American driving.
- 05
Tacoma Art Museum
Focused on art of the Northwest and American West, the museum holds a notable collection of Chihuly glass and Western art in a downtown building near Union Station.
