Things to do in Spearfish

Spearfish sits at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon in the northern Black Hills, a college town and outdoor hub that has become a popular place to live, retire and own a second home. Black Hills State University brings students and faculty, and the town’s economy runs on tourism, healthcare, construction and a growing number of remote workers drawn by the scenery and South Dakota’s lack of a state income tax. Nearby Deadwood and Lead carry the region’s gold-rush history, and the former Homestake gold mine is now the Sanford Underground Research Facility, a deep physics laboratory.
