Things to do in San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo grew up around a Spanish mission founded in 1772, and today it is the county seat and the cultural center of California’s Central Coast. Cal Poly is the largest employer and gives the city a lively, educated college-town feel, while county government, health care, tourism, wine and a growing technology sector fill out the economy. Downtown’s creekside paths, historic buildings and Thursday night farmers market are regularly cited as reasons people relocate here.

  1. 01

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

The fifth of California’s missions still serves as a parish church, and its museum and adjacent Mission Plaza along San Luis Creek form the heart of downtown.

  2. 02

    Downtown Farmers’ Market

Every Thursday evening, Higuera Street closes to traffic for local produce, barbecue smoke, street performers and crowds of students, families and visitors.

  3. 03

    Madonna Inn

Known for its pink decor and individually themed guest rooms, this roadside landmark is worth a stop for a slice of cake in its dining room or coffee shop.

  4. 04

    Bishop Peak

The tallest of the volcanic Nine Sisters peaks offers a moderate hike to rocky summit views over the city, the Los Osos Valley and the coast.

  5. 05

    Edna Valley Wineries

Just southeast of town, cool ocean breezes make the Edna Valley well suited to chardonnay and pinot noir, with tasting rooms set among the vineyards.

  6. 06

    Avila Beach and Pismo Beach

Sheltered Avila Beach has a small waterfront and a working pier, while Pismo Beach offers a long sandy shoreline, clam chowder and surfing a few miles south.
