Things to do in Nantucket

Nantucket lies about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and its remoteness has preserved a town that looks much as it did when it was the center of the world’s whaling trade in the early 19th century. Cobblestone Main Street, captains’ houses and gray cedar-shingled cottages make up one of the largest concentrations of pre–Civil War buildings in the country.     Housed partly in a former candle factory, the Nantucket Historical Association’s museum tells the island’s whaling story, centered on a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton suspended overhead.

    At the island’s eastern end, the village known as ’Sconset is famous for rose-covered cottages, the Sankaty Head Lighthouse and the Bluff Walk, a footpath that passes along the edge of seaside lawns.
