Things to do in Bardstown

Bardstown is Kentucky’s second-oldest city, founded in 1780, and it calls itself the Bourbon Capital of the World with good reason. Heaven Hill, Barton 1792, Willett, Lux Row and Bardstown Bourbon Company all operate distilleries in and around town, while Maker’s Mark in Loretto and Jim Beam in Clermont are short drives away. Rows of aging warehouses dot the surrounding countryside, and bourbon now supports a large share of the area’s jobs along with tourism and agriculture. The historic downtown has inns, taverns and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals west of the Appalachians.

    Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience

  2. 02

    Maker’s Mark Distillery

In Loretto, about 20 minutes south, the distillery’s black-and-red buildings sit on a picturesque campus where visitors can tour the process and hand-dip a bottle in red wax.

  3. 03

    Jim Beam American Stillhouse

In Clermont north of Bardstown, the world’s best-selling bourbon brand offers tours, tastings and a restaurant at its historic distillery.

  4. 04

My Old Kentucky Home State Park

Federal Hill, the mansion said to have inspired Stephen Foster’s song “My Old Kentucky Home,” offers guided tours by costumed interpreters and a golf course on the grounds.

  5. 05

    Bernheim Forest

This large arboretum and research forest near Clermont offers trails, gardens, a canopy tree walk and three giant forest sculptures made from recycled materials.

  6. 06
