Florence is the largest of the four Shoals cities on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, alongside Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. Handy, the Father of the Blues, was born in Florence. The economy includes manufacturing, healthcare, TVA operations around Wilson Dam and the University of North Alabama, known for keeping live lions on campus.
