Things to do in Juneau

Juneau is Alaska’s capital and one of the most unusual state capitals in the country: no road connects it to the rest of North America, so everyone arrives by air or by sea. Set between the steep mountains of the Juneau Icefield and the Gastineau Channel, the city was founded on a gold strike in 1880 and grew with large hard-rock mines. Today state government is the largest employer, alongside tourism, mining, fishing, healthcare and the University of Alaska Southeast, and in summer cruise ships bring large crowds to the downtown waterfront.

  1. 01

    Mendenhall Glacier

About 12 miles from downtown, this glacier flows into a lake beside a visitor center, with trails to Nugget Falls and views of the ice.

  2. 02

    Mount Roberts Tramway

From the cruise ship docks, the tram climbs to a mountainside nature center, restaurant and trails with views over Gastineau Channel.

  3. 03

    Whale watching in Auke Bay

Humpback whales feed in the waters around Juneau each summer, and boat tours from Auke Bay regularly spot them along with orcas and sea lions.

  4. 04

    Tracy Arm

Day cruises travel up this steep-walled fjord south of Juneau to the face of the Sawyer Glaciers, passing waterfalls, icebergs and seals hauled out on the ice.

  5. 05

    Alaska State Museum

In the Father Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building downtown, the museum presents Alaska Native art and culture, Russian America and the state’s modern history.

  6. 06

    Juneau Icefield flightseeing

Helicopter and floatplane tours fly over the vast icefield behind the city, and some land on glaciers for dog sledding or walking on the ice.
