Things to do in Nantucket

Nantucket lies about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and its remoteness has preserved a town that looks much as it did when it was the center of the world’s whaling trade in the early 19th century. Cobblestone Main Street, captains’ houses and gray cedar-shingled cottages make up one of the largest concentrations of pre–Civil War buildings in the country. Today the island economy runs on tourism, second homes, construction and the businesses that serve a summer population many times larger than its year-round community.

  1. 01

    Whaling Museum

Housed partly in a former candle factory, the Nantucket Historical Association’s museum tells the island’s whaling story, centered on a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton suspended overhead.

  2. 02

    Siasconset

At the island’s eastern end, the village known as ’Sconset is famous for rose-covered cottages, the Sankaty Head Lighthouse and the Bluff Walk, a footpath that passes along the edge of seaside lawns.

  3. 03

    Brant Point Lighthouse

This small white lighthouse marks the harbor entrance, and by tradition departing passengers toss pennies overboard as their ferry passes to ensure they return to the island.

  4. 04

    Surfside and Jetties Beaches

Surfside on the south shore offers ocean waves a short bike ride from town, while Jetties Beach on the calmer harbor side suits families, with a playground and water sports rentals.

  5. 05

    Cisco Brewers

Off a sandy road outside town, the island’s brewery, winery and distillery share a casual outdoor compound with live music and food trucks, a favorite summer afternoon stop.

  6. 06

Main Street and the Historic District

The cobblestone heart of town is lined with brick and clapboard buildings housing boutiques, galleries and restaurants, with grand captains’ homes farther up the hill.
