Things to do in Key West

Key West sits at the end of the Overseas Highway, closer to Havana than to Miami, and that distance is part of its appeal. The island runs on its own rhythm: conch houses and gingerbread trim in Old Town, sunset at Mallory Square, Duval Street's bars and galleries, and a literary history that includes Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Elizabeth Bishop. Tourism drives the economy, along with a Naval Air Station and a busy charter fishing and diving industry.

  1. 01

    Mallory Square Sunset Celebration

Every evening, crowds gather on the waterfront to watch the sun set over the Gulf, accompanied by street performers, musicians, artists and food vendors.

  2. 02

    Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

The Spanish Colonial house where Hemingway lived and wrote during the 1930s is now a museum, famous for its dozens of six-toed cats, many descended from a cat given to him.

  3. 03

    Duval Street

Key West's main drag runs from the Gulf to the Atlantic, lined with bars, restaurants, galleries and shops, including longtime landmarks like Sloppy Joe's.

  4. 04

    Dry Tortugas National Park

About 70 miles west and reachable only by ferry, seaplane or private boat, this remote park protects massive 19th-century Fort Jefferson and clear water ideal for snorkeling.

  5. 05

    Southernmost Point Buoy

The striped concrete marker at Whitehead and South streets, billed as the southernmost point in the continental U.S., is one of the most photographed spots on the island.

  6. 06

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

This Civil War-era fort sits beside one of Key West's best beaches, with snorkeling off the rocky shoreline, shaded picnic areas and sunset views.
