Things to do in Livingston

Livingston was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway, and for decades it was the place where passengers changed trains for the branch line to Yellowstone’s north entrance. The historic downtown still has its brick storefronts, saloons and grand railroad depot, now joined by galleries, bookstores and restaurants. Writers, artists and filmmakers have long gravitated here, and the economy today mixes tourism, outfitting, ranching, healthcare and the many second homes and ranches of Paradise Valley, which stretches south along the Yellowstone River toward the park.

  1. 01

Paradise Valley and Chico Hot Springs

South of town, the Yellowstone River winds between the Absaroka and Gallatin ranges, and the historic Chico Hot Springs resort at Pray offers outdoor pools and a well-known dining room.

  2. 02

    Yellowstone River

The river runs through town and Paradise Valley, offering famous trout fishing, scenic floats and the summer hatches that draw anglers from around the world.

  3. 03

    Livingston Depot Center

The 1902 Northern Pacific depot, designed by the architects of New York’s Grand Central Terminal, houses a museum of railroad history and the region’s past.

    Yellowstone Gateway Museum

Housed in a historic schoolhouse, this museum covers Park County’s history, from archaeological finds and Native American artifacts to the railroad and early Yellowstone tourism.

  5. 05

    Mammoth Hot Springs

Just inside the north entrance, about an hour south, travertine terraces step down a hillside beside historic Fort Yellowstone, often with elk grazing nearby.

  6. 06

    Lamar Valley

In the northeast corner of the park, this broad valley is one of the best places in North America to watch wolves, along with bison, elk and pronghorn.
