Things to do in Natchez

Natchez sits on high bluffs above the Mississippi River and is one of the oldest cities on the river, founded by the French in 1716. Its collection of antebellum homes is among the largest in the country, built with fortunes made in cotton by planters whose wealth depended on enslaved labor, and the city now tells that history more fully, including at the Forks of the Road, once one of the largest slave markets in the Deep South. Tourism, healthcare, oil and gas and timber support the local economy, and the Natchez Trace Parkway begins here.
