French Lick and neighboring West Baden Springs grew into a fashionable resort destination in the early 20th century, when wealthy visitors traveled by train to drink and bathe in the area’s mineral springs. Today, the restored French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel, whose famous domed atrium was once called the eighth wonder of the world, are the heart of a resort that includes a casino, spas and championship golf. French Lick is about two hours from Indianapolis and Louisville and farther from Chicago or Cincinnati, mostly on two-lane roads through the hills.
