Friday Harbor is the only incorporated town on San Juan Island and the commercial hub of the San Juan Islands, an archipelago in the far northwest corner of Washington. Its ferry landing and marina open onto a walkable town of restaurants, galleries, inns and whale-watching outfitters, and the island beyond is a mix of farms, forests, rocky shoreline and second homes. The economy runs on tourism, real estate, construction and marine services, along with the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories, a respected marine science station.
Getting here by ferry from Anacortes means a drive from Seattle, a reservation, and often a long wait in the summer lines, with total travel time that can stretch past four hours. Things to do in Friday Harbor
When to go. Late spring through early fall is prime time in the San Juans, when the islands’ position in the Olympic Mountains’ rain shadow brings dry, sunny days and calm water for kayaking. Orca and humpback sightings are most frequent from May through September, and the lavender fields bloom in July. Summer weekends are busy, so plan lodging early. Winter is quiet, cool and peaceful, with storm watching and uncrowded trails.

Known as Whale Watch Park, this west-side park with its small lighthouse is one of the best places in the world to watch orcas from shore.

English Camp and American Camp preserve the story of the 1859 Pig War, a border standoff settled peacefully, with prairie, beaches and trails at both sites.
