Harrisburg has been Pennsylvania’s capital since 1812, and state government, with its legislators, agencies, lobbyists and lawyers, shapes much of daily life around the domed Capitol on the Susquehanna River. The region is also a logistics powerhouse, with distribution centers clustered along Interstate 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and has strong health care employers such as Penn State Health’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Hershey, home to the chocolate company and its attractions, lies just to the east.
