Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas, yet one of the least developed, a sprawl of pine forest, mangrove creeks and tidal flats divided by channels called bights. Along its east coast runs one of the longest barrier reefs in the world, which drops off into the Tongue of the Ocean, a deep trench prized by wall divers. Andros is famous for its blue holes, with one of the greatest concentrations of them anywhere on earth, and its endless flats have made it a destination for serious bonefish anglers. Andros Town and Fresh Creek in central Andros are home to dive lodges, the Androsia batik studio and a U.S. Navy undersea testing center.
Andros sits close to Nassau but feels far removed, and airline connections can be awkward. A private flight from Florida lands at Andros Town Airport, near the lodges of central Andros, and lets anglers and divers arrive with their gear on their own schedule. Travelers need a passport and clear Bahamas customs and immigration on arrival, then U.S. customs on the return. Booking the whole airplane for one price suits fishing groups and families heading out for a week of flats, reef and quiet.

Things to do in Andros
When to go. The cooler, drier months from November through May are prime time on Andros, with comfortable temperatures and good visibility for diving. Bonefishing is good year-round, and spring is a favorite season with anglers. Summer brings heat, humidity, biting insects and calm seas for diving, and hurricane season runs from June through November, so keep plans flexible during late summer and early fall.
