Bimini is the closest part of the Bahamas to the United States, a pair of small islands and a scattering of cays roughly 50 miles east of Miami. Its reputation was made by the sea: Ernest Hemingway fished and wrote here in the 1930s, and the Gulf Stream running just offshore has long made Bimini a center of big-game fishing for marlin, tuna and wahoo. During Prohibition, Alice Town on North Bimini was a busy rum-running base. Today North Bimini holds the settlements and a large resort and marina, while South Bimini is home to the airport and a renowned shark research station.
The crossing from South Florida is one of the shortest anywhere in the Bahamas, so a private flight makes Bimini a realistic day trip or a quick fishing weekend without the time and hassle of a boat crossing or an airline connection. You land on South Bimini and reach North Bimini by a short ride and water taxi. Bring a passport for Bahamas customs and immigration on arrival and U.S. customs on the way home. With the whole airplane at one price, a fishing party can travel together on its own schedule.

Things to do in Bimini
When to go. Bimini’s fishing calendar shapes its seasons: wahoo run in the cooler winter months, while spring and early summer bring tuna, marlin and a string of fishing tournaments that fill the marinas. December through April offers dry, pleasant weather, though winter cold fronts can bring windy days. Summer is hot with calm seas, and hurricane season runs June through November, with the most risk in late summer and early fall.
