Freeport was built from scratch in the 1950s as a free-trade zone, created under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement and run in large part by the Grand Bahama Port Authority. The result is a planned city with an industrial backbone unusual for the Bahamas: a deepwater container port, a major ship-repair yard, oil storage terminals and manufacturing. Next door, Lucaya is the resort side of town, with beachfront hotels, a marina and the shops and restaurants of Port Lucaya Marketplace, while the rest of Grand Bahama stretches away in pine forest, mangrove creeks and long empty beaches.
Grand Bahama sits just off the coast of Palm Beach County, one of the shortest crossings to the Bahamas from Florida, so a private flight turns it into a practical day trip for business or an easy long weekend. Choose your departure time, fly direct and land a few minutes from your meeting or hotel. Bring a passport: you’ll clear Bahamas customs and immigration on arrival and U.S. customs when you return. Beyond Freeport, West End’s marina and the caves and beaches of Lucayan National Park reward a few extra days.

Things to do in Freeport
When to go. Winter and spring are Grand Bahama’s best seasons, with warm, dry weather from December through April and comfortable water for diving and snorkeling. Junkanoo celebrations on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day bring drums and costumed dancers to the streets. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon showers, and hurricane season from June through November calls for flexible plans, especially in late summer and early fall.
- 01
Lucayan National Park
About 25 miles east of Freeport, the park protects one of the world’s longest charted underwater cave systems, a mangrove boardwalk and the wide, quiet sweep of Gold Rock Beach.
- 02
Port Lucaya Marketplace
Waterfront shops, bars and restaurants surround a central bandstand on the marina in Lucaya, with live music on many evenings and boat tours leaving from the docks.
- 03
Garden of the Groves
A peaceful botanical garden with waterfalls, ponds, a small hillside chapel and walking paths through tropical plantings, plus a café and local artisan shops.
- 04
Taino Beach
A long stretch of soft sand east of Lucaya with clear, shallow water, beach bars and the casual fish fry at nearby Smith’s Point, a favorite with residents.
- 05
Peterson Cay National Park
This tiny cay off the south shore, one of the smallest national parks in the Bahamas, is ringed by coral gardens that make for easy snorkeling on a boat excursion.
- 06
West End
Grand Bahama’s oldest settlement, once a Prohibition-era rum-running base, sits at the island’s western tip and is a popular arrival point for boaters crossing from Florida.
