Eugene is Oregon’s second-largest city and home to the University of Oregon, which drives much of the city’s economy, culture and calendar. Its track and field heritage runs deep: coach Bill Bowerman developed running shoes here, his former runner Phil Knight co-founded Nike with him, and rebuilt Hayward Field hosts major championships. Healthcare, software, food and beverage producers and the broader Lane County economy add to the mix, along with a strong counterculture streak and a growing wine region to the south and west.
Eugene is about two hours south of Portland on I-5 and far from most other cities, so game days, recruiting visits, meet weekends and business trips are much easier by air. Things to do in Eugene
When to go. Summer is dry and warm in Eugene, the best season for river trips, hiking and wine touring, and the Oregon Country Fair takes place in nearby Veneta in July. Spring brings the outdoor track season at Hayward Field, and fall is football season, when hotels fill on home game weekends. Winters are mild and rainy, with skiing at Willamette Pass in the Cascades about an hour and a half away.
