Hood River sits in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, where steady summer winds funnel through the canyon and have made the town one of the world’s great windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations. Orchards of pears, apples and cherries fill the Hood River Valley, which rises south toward the snowy peak of Mount Hood, and the town is known for breweries, cideries and wineries. Hood River is about an hour east of Portland on I-84, a drive that can slow in summer traffic or close in winter ice storms. When to go. Summer is high season in Hood River, with dry, sunny days and the strong winds that draw windsurfers and kiteboarders from around the world. Spring brings orchard blossoms and wildflowers on the Gorge’s eastern slopes, and fall is harvest time, with the Hood River Valley Harvest Fest in October.
